Desert Outdoor Center (Aquatic Life, Mammals, Feathered Friends)

April 15 @ 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

The Inspiration Academy will be going on a field trip on Monday, April 15th. We will depart from the school at 8:30 am and return at 3:30 pm. The Desert Outdoor Center’s programs will include Aquatic Life, Mammals, Feathered Friends, and the Wind Blade Challenge.

  • In the Aquatic Life program, students will take on the role of microbiologists. They will explore aquatic ecosystems and organisms, and learn about the distinctions between lakes and ponds by examining living specimens under a microscope. This program is applicable for grades 2-12.
  • The Feathered Friends program, suitable for students from grades 1-5, will allow students to delve into the many adaptations that help birds thrive in diverse environments. Through hands-on experiments, they will learn about the correlation between a bird’s beak and its survival capacity in a specific habitat. They will also have the opportunity to closely examine the talons, wings, and feathers of many native Arizona birds, providing them with an unparalleled insight into these ‘masters of the air’.
  • The Mammals program, designed for students from kindergarten to grade 12, will teach students about the physical traits that help mammals survive and how they differ from other creatures. Students will have the chance to examine mammal pelts, skulls, and tracks, with engaging activities helping them remember the mammals native to Arizona.
  • Lastly, the Wind Blade Challenge is a new addition to the program and is suitable for students from grades 5-12. In this session, students will form teams to design and build wind turbine blades. They will then use a multimeter tool to measure the efficiency of their blades in capturing wind and generating electricity. The team that creates the most energy-efficient blades will win the competition. This exciting, inquiry-based class introduces students to the principles of wind energy and instills a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
